MAINTENANCE WORKER

SOLID WASTE TRANSFER STATION

Public Works Department

Pay Grade: 47

Pay Range: $13.96 to $19.54 DOE/Q

Effective July 1, 2021: Pay Range: $14.38 to $21.58 DOE/Q

FLSA Status: Non- Exempt (eligible for overtime)

Position Summary:

Special Requirements: This position may be required to work Tuesday through Saturday. Must be available to work overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications: Maintenance Worker: High School diploma or equivalent. Construction or other trade experience preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver's license, a commercial driver's license (CDL) is preferred. Candidates that have or obtain a CDL or other trade skills, such as welding or mechanical are preferred and will be compensated for these additional skills.

Candidate of choice must pass a pre-employment drug test and background/criminal history check.

Responsibilities: Under general supervision, performs a variety of manual and semi-skilled work in the collection and processing of solid waste at the City of Prescott Transfer Station. Sort and capture recyclables from the Solid Waste stream at the Transfer Station. Ensure the cleanliness and upkeep of the transfer station facility, assist, direct and educate customers in proper disposal methods. Pick up, load, and transport waste products to transfer station for proper disposal; operate pickup truck or other light automotive equipment. Operate equipment such as bobcats, loaders, 1-ton dump trucks, as assigned; use and maintain small hand and power tools. Help maintain public recycling convenience center and grounds; assist in the preparation and clean-up of special events and services. Other duties are performed as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Other Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of machinery, equipment and tools necessary for maintaining public areas.
  • Knowledge of basic preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of common hand and power tools.
  • Skill in following oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in operating and working around moving equipment.
  • Skill in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.
  • Skill in utilizing customer service techniques when responding to inquiries and complaints.

Physical Ability: Sufficient to effectively and safely perform required duties and to safely operate required equipment and city vehicle as needed. Must be able to lift 75 pounds.

Visual Ability: Must be able to see clearly, with correction if necessary, during both day and evening hours and in potentially adverse weather conditions and sufficient to effectively and safely operate required vehicles; read street/road signs, maps, and handwritten/typewritten material and perform required duties.

Hearing and Speaking Ability: Sufficient to clearly, concisely and effectively communicate in English (reading, writing, speaking) in person and over the telephone in English; bilingual skills beneficial.
