For further information, visit: http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ous/international/usnei/us/edlite-visitus-forrecog.html.Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) authorizes VA to provide student loan reduction payments to employees with qualifying loans who are in health care positions providing direct patient care services and are in positions that are considered hard to recruit or retain. The loan must be for the health professional's education that qualified the applicant for a specific position. Each Veterans Health Administration (VHA) facility determines which positions are hard to recruit and retain and when the facility will offer EDRP for these positions. EDRP is a recruitment and retention incentive only offered or approved for certain positions, one criteria must have a direct patient care responsibility. EDRP may be authorized for this position.

Duties consist of assisting with the various clinics including: Hematology/Oncology, Surgery, Endoscopy, GI, Urology, and Podiatry as well as scrubbing and circulating for various procedures. Other duties such as ordering supplies, instrumentation, revision of policies and procedures, participating in performance improvement and serving on councils as assigned are also the responsibility of the Surgical Clinic RN.The Surgical Nurse:


  • Provides a full range of nursing care to patients with complex care needs utilizing the nursing process based on the ANA Standards of Nursing PracticeDdemonstrates consistent clinical competence in providing nursing care
  • uses equipment correctly and accurately interprets data
  • recognizes subtle changes in patient's condition and responds timely, choosing the correct interventions
  • demonstrates evidence of critical thinking skills in identifying, analyzing, and resolving patient care problems on the unit
  • performs ongoing assessment of patient condition and response to treatment
  • provides leadership in establishing goals, evaluating the plan of care, and in discharge planning
  • initiates referrals to other disciplines and/or services as appropriate
  • assesses the patient's learning needs, learning preference, and readiness to learn
  • modifies teaching approach based on knowledge of human behavior, motivations, and reactions to situations
  • ensures documentation is technically informative, complete, accurate, consistent, concise, and timely
  • evaluates and documents patient response to interventions and progress towards attainment of goals and expected outcomes
  • revises interdisciplinary plan of care based upon on-going patient assessment and evaluation
  • uses the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) and the Bar Coded Medication Administration (BCMA) software per policy
  • makes assignments and directs activities of other unit staff, (RNs, LPNs, students, PSAs, other team members)
  • assigns patient care responsibilities based upon patient needs and competencies of staff
  • provides direction to staff for unit activities in meeting patient care needs
  • uses a team approach to identify, analyze, and resolve patient care problems that result in improved patient outcomes
  • recognizes the patient has a problem
  • manages problems safely and effectively, recognizing his/her scope of practice
  • takes the right action for the right reason


    Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, Variable 10 Hr. Days, compressed schedule

    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
    • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
    • Two years of surgical experience is required.


      Preferred Experience/Characteristics:


      • Two years of surgical experience
      • Experience in Hematology, Oncology and Case Management
      • Poise and articulation in communicating with people of varied education levels and backgrounds
      • Willingness to work cooperatively as a team member
      • Self motivation in pursuit of meeting standards
      • Efficient work relationship in collaborative efforts with other health professions
      • Experience providing leadership and education to staff and caregivers
      • Ability to appropriately determine cost-effectiveness when using resources


        Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:


        • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
        • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
        • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
        • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
        • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.
