Job Description:

The Physician (Psychiatrist) - provides comprehensive psychiatric care of veterans in the Residential Rehabilitative Treatment Program (RRTP). RRTP Veterans tend to have complex mental health needs requiring psychiatric care as part of their holistic health care.Note: Only education or degrees recognized by the U.S. Department of Education from accredited colleges, universities, schools, or institutions may be used to qualify for Federal employment. If selected, you are encouraged to apply for this award program and must meet specific individual eligibility criteria in accordance with VA Policy 1021. Award amount is determined after review of a complete EDRP application and supporting documentation and final approval by the Under Secretary for Health or designated official.

Recruitment/Relocation Incentive: Authorized for highly qualified candidates.

The Psychiatrist is responsible and accountable for:


  • Mental health assessments, including suicide risk assessments and diagnostic assessments for both acute and chronic
  • mental health conditions
  • Crisis evaluation & intervention/management
  • Treatment, including psychiatric pharmacotherapy within the VA formulary guidelines and non-pharmacotherapy
  • interventions (e.g. psychotherapies)
  • Consultative and liaison services
  • Treatment planning and coordination with other disciplines
  • Administrative duties
  • Ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests
  • Documentation using the VA electronic record (i.e. CPRS)
  • Teaching and counseling patients/families including health promotion and disease prevention
  • Teaching and consulting with other RRTP staff regarding Mental Health conditions
  • Referrals to specialty care services, as indicated
  • Hospital admissions for acute, mental-health decompensation
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team
  • Teaching of trainees within MHBS
  • Other duties as assigned within the physician's scope of practice
  • Performs on-call duties, if and as assigned


    Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

    Basic Requirements:


    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
    • Physical requirements outlined below.


      Preferred Experience: Board Certification or Board Eligibility in Psychiatry.

      Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

      Physical Requirements:


      • Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time.
      • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
      • Must be able to travel by automobile or airplane and to drive a vehicle without assistance.
      • Must have the manual dexterity and visual acuity to be able to operate a standard computer keyboard and/or a handheld device such as a blackberry or iPhone.
      • Must be physically able to speak publicly to large gatherings.
      • Must be able to hear well enough to participate in conference calls.
