Performs a variety of duties in support of the unit's trails and wilderness program in the area of recreation, volunteers, ecology and data collection to prepare the incumbent to assume the full performance level of GS-07. Learn more about this agency Responsibilities Perform trail maintenance and construction work inside and outside Wilderness. Use completed trail condition surveys and design information to prepare preliminary plans for trail maintenance, reconstruction or construction. Train volunteer crews in wilderness, trails construction and re-vegetation techniques to maintain natural resources. Identify and complete trail maintenance, reconstruction or construction work required to meet land management priorities and goals. Maintain and operate vehicles, power and hand tools and shop equipment to satisfy safety standards. Identify and plan for future trail construction, reconstruction, maintenance and restoration projects to achieve resource management goals. Evaluate trail and wilderness area projects to maintain resources based on approved land management plans. Develop and monitor logistics needed to complete wilderness and trail rehabilitation, reconstruction and construction projects. Develop trail and wilderness construction project plans and cost estimates to meet land management goals within budget constraints. Analyze visitor use surveys to monitor visitor use and impact on wilderness and trail areas. Patrol wilderness and trails in general forest areas to ensure areas are operated, used, and maintained in accordance with management plans. Explain regulations concerning the Wilderness Act and trails management. Explain or enforce use regulations according to Wilderness Act and trails management. Travel Required 25% or less - Travel with overnight lodging may be required for meetings, training, workshops, and/or field/site visits. Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. Specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following: Assisted in planning and implementing the logistics of wilderness and non-wilderness projects associated with trail maintenance and reconstruction projects; Patrolled wilderness to ensure that areas are operated, used, and maintained in accordance with wilderness management plans; Maintained visitors use records and prepared visitors use information for data processing; Conducted education programs addressing Leave No Trace camping, wilderness philosophy and minimal stock impacts. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education Additional information Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP), Reemployment Priority List (RPL) or Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP): To exercise selection priority for this vacancy, CTAP/RPL/ICTAP candidates must meet the basic eligibility requirements and all selective factors. CTAP/ICTAP candidates must be rated and determined to be well qualified (or above) based on an evaluation of the competencies listed in the How You Will Be Evaluated section. When assessed through a score-based category rating method, CTAP/ICTAP applicants must receive a rating of at least 85 out of a possible 100. Veterans who are preference eligible or who have been separated from the armed forces under honorable conditions after three years or more of continuous active service are eligible for consideration under the Veteran's Employment Opportunity Act (VEOA). Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA) provides current or former temporary or term employees of federal land management agencies opportunity to compete for permanent competitive service positions. Individuals must have more than 24 months of service without a break between appointments of two or more years. Service must be in the competitive service and have been at a successful level of performance or better. Part-time and intermittent service will be credited only for time actually worked. Non-pay status (such as LWOP) is credited for up to six months in a calendar year; anything beyond six months is not credited.
